Graham Kunimba has been appointed acting chief executive officer for the Tobacco Association of Malawi (Tama).

The appointment follows the death of former Tama CEO Felix Mkumba on February 27 this year.

Kunimba joined Tama as operations manager on October 1 2001 and rose through the ranks of the organisation to the current position.

As an acting CEO, he will be expected to provide strategic direction to Tama until a substantive CEO is appointed.

He said his vision will be to encourage farmers to participate in value addition to tobacco, including producing cigarettes.

“I will encourage farmers to adopt internationally accepted production procedures so that growers do not give loopholes to anti-tobacco lobbyists to talk bad of the crop,” he said, citing the use of banned chemicals and children as some of the unacceptable practices in tobacco production.

Kunimba holds a master’s in business administration.
