Kyungu urges Judiciary to be tough on vandalism cases

Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga has appealed to the Judiciary to be tough when handling cases of vandalism to deter would-be perpetrators.

Kyungu was speaking in Karonga on Friday during an anti-vandalism campaign jointly organised by Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom), Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) and Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) in collaboration with Malawi Police Service (MPS).

“Most of the offenders of vandalism are given small fines such as K100 000 which they are able to pay and get released. As a result, they go back to steal again.

“Our judicial system needs to be a bit harsh in the way it manages such cases because leniency is slowly killing justice,” he said.

Chairperson for the organising committee Douglas Kamanga called on Malawians to join hands with the service providers to bring to book the offenders.

“Some of these problems are not a result of our inefficiencies, but vandalism. We call upon Malawians of goodwill to assist us in apprehending those that are tampering with our property,’’ he said.

The campaign ended with a football match between  Karonga United and Uliwa United, where the former beat the latter 5-4 on post-match penalties. n
