Land encroachment worries city council
The Lilongwe City Council (LCC) has expressed concern over the rate at which residents are encroaching on land in the city.
LCC chief town planning officer Catherine Kulemeka told a public consultation on the draft urban structure plan for the city recently that it is sad that most encroachers are aware of the law.
“If you look at the structures being constructed in areas 49, 25, Likuni and the area along Mchinji Road, it is evident that these [encroachers] are learned and well to do people. These are people who are supposed to abide by laws,” she said.
Kulemeka said the council is still receiving comments on the proposed land use draft until September 30 2013 and that the council is upgrading some areas to make them proper residential areas.
“Lilongwe City is currently composed of 57 areas. In addition, Area 58 is scheduled to be under its jurisdiction. The 2008 census has already included area 58 (Chinsapo) as part of Lilongwe City, converting it from the previous Lilongwe District,” reads part of the draft.
The proposed land use plan has been drafted in conjunction with Local Government and Rural Development and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
