Lawi shines at cancer dinner

Man of the moment, Lawi, is increasingly proving to music lovers that he is not only good at coming out of the studio with fully baked music, but also fantastic at performing live and making the audience dance to his music.

On Saturday night Lawi, real name Francis Chris Phiri, left a mark among the participants at a cancer awareness dinner organised by Cancer Survivors Quest (CSQ) to fundraise funds for the fight against the disease.

When Lawi was invited to take to the stage, jubilation engulfed the audience, prompting the musician to take the microphone and go straight to play the songs Asamala/Prayer and Lilongwe.

The hits instantly prompted the audience to start shaking their bodies, especially when the 28-year-old musician played the hit The Whistling Song.

But Lawi’s performance would have been incomplete without Amaona Kuchedwa, the hit that has turned into a national anthem.

So much was the demand for Amaona Kuchedwa that when Lawi took his time to sing the song, one patron, Rodney Goneso, fished out K10 000 (US$25) and donated it to CSQ for Lawi to sing the song.

“This music fan akuona kuchedwa kuti ndiyimbe Amaona Kuchedwa. Therefore, I can’t delay any further, but to sing this song,” said Lawi, much to the excitement of the jam-packed room who stood up and danced to the song, which brought the ceremony to an end.

And as they trekked out to their cars on departure from the Crossroads Hotel campus for their homes, most of the patrons could be heard singing Amaona Kuchedwa.

Chairperson of CSQ, Chikhulupiriro Ng’ombe, urged the patrons to join hands in the fight against cancer.

“Everyone should ensure that he or she gets tested for cancer regularly so that it can be cured at its early stage,” said Ng’ombe.

CSQ is a non-profit organisation that is run by cancer survivors founded in 2011 with an objective to mobilise individuals, groups and organisations that work to enhance the lives of cancer patients and survivors.
