Let them celebrate movement on corruption index

Listen to this article

Dearest Judge Mbadwa,

You have probably heard that Mapuya has been very busy lately; shuttling between markets and forests breaking ground for numerous projects that you want to implement in the few remaining months before the polls or buying bonya, pumpkins and doing some drama with serious sofa makers in the most populous township of Nyasaland.

I know My Lord you have also been busy lately granting injunctions and vacating others that almost created chaos in the justice delivery system.

Remember, My Lord, last year we briefed you about the Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index that showed that Malawi had moved up eight places from position 112 in 2015 to 120 in 2016; what a feat under the leadership of Mapuya!

Now, My Lord, Mapuya has even broken a new record! His country has climbed the ladder on corruption perception index again. Moving two places from 120 in 2016 to 122 in 2017 is quite some feat.

Mapuya and his People’s Demagogic Party (PDP) have overseen the growth of graft at all levels hahahaha! Statistics don’t lie, do they?

My Lord, isn’t it travesty of justice to let this recognition pass quietly? For a country that has celebrated every honour bestowed on Mapuya and people he leads, it was strange once again that this accomplishment was received without fanfare.

Not so long ago when Malawi moved good steps on the ease of doing business ranking, Mapuya and his cronies were all over celebrating that score. Why haven’t we congratulated the establishment for this recent achievement My Lord?

Didn’t the PDP go to town when some not so obscure a university honoured Mapuya with a degree of Alphabet (not Letters) Honoris Causa?

My Lord where are the celebratory programmes that regularly follow any recognition of this type on Nyasaland Television? Weren’t we recently celebrating the commendation from the World Bank?  Why are they chickening out now?

We want companies and organisations to start flighting adverts on Nyasaland Television congratulating Mapuya and Nyasaland for moving from position 120 to 122 on corruption perception index.

It means that the PDP administration has been generous in its dealings; allowing people to engage in graft freely as a right they have to enjoy.

Why am I complaining My Lord? I feel our right to celebrate a recognition of some sort by an international organisation has been violated. I think there was a precedent that was set, which is to celebrate success. My Lord we have just seen corruption worsening in the country since 2012.

When the kwacha appreciates we celebrate; why should the people who have overseen the increase of corruption as justified by movement of eight places on the index, not call for celebrations? This was indeed an impressive feat, of course in the negative way.

I am asking your tribunal to order that a party be held to celebrate the worsening of corruption. Let Mapuya and group invite financiers who grace Green Night fundraising events just to add colour to the event. How much will those sitting next to Mapuya offer?

Waiting to hear from you,

Yours sincerely,

Kanani Vimbundi.
