Lightning has struck four people in Rumphi, leaving three dead.

The accident, which happened on Friday evening at Bolero, has seen one person being referred to Rumphi District Hospital in critical condition.

In an interview yesterday, Rumphi Police Station officer-in-charge Assistant Commissioner Peter Chinseu confirmed both the occurrence and casualty levels.

Chinseu could not identify the victims, saying details were sketchy.

“Not much is known, but I can confirm that three have been pronounced dead and one is in a critical condition at Rumphi District Hospital,” he said.

The tragedy follows a spate of early rains which also left tens of families homeless at Kaviwale.

The locality, which is home to the National Food Reserve Authority’s silos and oil reserves being constructed by the National Oil Company, survived with crumbling houses and blown up roofs following the heavy rains which engulfed the district.
