Lightning kills three at a funeral in Phalombe

Three women died while two others were injured on Tuesday when lightning struck them at a funeral ceremony in Phalombe.

Phalombe Police public relations officer Augustus Nkhwazi said in an interview on Wednesday that the incident occurred at Nyezerera in Muliya Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaduya in the district.thunderstorm

Nkhwazi identified the three as Gladys Mmeto of Chilumpha Village, T/A Mlumbe and Zione Jamali of Balakasi Village, T/A Chikowi both in Zomba while the third one is Juliana Kampondeni of Lolo Village, T/A Nanseta in Thyolo.

Those injured are Zainabu Khamisi of Balakasi Village, T/A Chikowi in Zomba and Doris Muhota of Muliya Village, T/A Kaduya in Phalombe.

From last week, most parts of the country have been receiving pre-season rains (chizimalupsa) which have damaged property and injured several people in Mzimba, Salima and Balaka, among other areas. n
