Lihaco suspends CEO, 2 others

Lilongwe Handling Company (Lihaco), a statutory corporation providing ground handling services to airlines in Malawi, has suspended its chief executive officer Alick Kasaila and two other senior managers over alleged financial mismanagement.

The other officers are acting operations director Lyton Zinyemba and acting finance and administration director Eunice Kaipa, board chairperson Gift Nankhuni confirmed yesterday.

Nankhuni: It is true

“It’s true. The matters are under investigation,” he said.

But Nankhuni refused to disclose details of the investigation and the exact amounts involved, saying doing so would jeopardise the investigations.

In a letter to staff dated January 24 2021, Lihaco human resources and administration manager Ethel Umali Zilirakhasu said Charles Makhuyula-Nkhoma is now acting operations director while Mphatso Mponda is acting finance and administration director.

The development comes as the Anti-Corruption Bureau is investigating allegations that management was involved in several financial abuses.

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition reported the alleged malpractices to the graft-busting body.

In recent months, Lihaco has been going through a number of financial hardships which in recent past has forced staff to threaten to down tools.
