Likoma a tourism attraction—minister

Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango says Likoma Island is a potential tourist attraction that can generate extra foreign exchange for Malawi.

The minister said this on Tuesday during the official hand over of Likoma Airport to Airport Developments Limited (ADL).

“Previously, tourists and other travellers to the island had to check in at Kamuzu International Airport [KIA].

“But with the launch of Likoma Airport to be Likoma International Airport, travellers will enjoy direct flights to and from the place. This is likely to boost tourism,” said Mhango.

The minister said the development will attract investors to the island and, consequently, create jobs and business opportunities.

Traditional Authority (T/A) Mkumpha sought an update from the minister on the progress of a jetty construction on the island.

Mhango said government was working on the issue and appreciated its significance to the people of Likoma.
