Lilongwe chief warns against maize selling

A chief in Lilongwe has called on maize traders not to ply their trade in his area between now and August.

Traditional Authority Kalumbu was speaking during a maize field demonstration organised by SeedCo Malawi at Kapedzera Full Primary School near Kamphata recently.

“I want to warn all chiefs that anyone who gives maize traders a chance to buy maize in his village will be chased away from this area together with the maize traders. The maize is still in the garden and people are still harvesting and we do not want to see traders here, they should wait,” said Kalumbu.

One farmer, Hawa Raphael, concurred with Kalumbu that selling maize anyhow is tantamount to bringing hunger in the area.

She asked the gathering to buy SeedCo maize seeds because they are high yielding.

SeedCo sales officer for the Centre, Waddington Lipenga, said all the maize varieties that his company deals in are high yielding, disease resistant and easy to store.

SeedCo maize seeds include SC 403 (Kanyani), SC 627 (Mkango) and SC 719 (Njovu).
