As the festive season draws closer, the Lilongwe Community Choir has organised a Christmas Carol event on December 24 in Lilongwe.

According to the choir director Dan Kauma, they will bring back the carols to heighten the mood for the season as Christians remember the birth of Jesus Christ.

“We shall present over 25 Christmas songs from well-known classical composers like George Frederic Handel and other Malawian choral compositions. We will bring the Malawian folk tunes to preserve our culture,” said Kauma.

The repertoire comprises famous carols like Silent Night, Hark the Herald, Joy to the World, Worthy is the Lamb, Company of the Preachers and the Hallelujah Chorus. Malawian compositions will include Changa, Sela, Go Go Go, Nzama, among others.

Said Kauma: “It is in the spirit of the choir to bring the carols for free so that family and loved ones can come together and sing along in these happy times.”

The choir annually holds Christmas Jazz Concert alongside the Kamuzu Academy but that did not take place this year.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we failed to visit schools for the blind where we chat and sing together and share the little we collect voluntarily from the group,” said Kauma.

Apart from the carol performances, Lilongwe Community Choir also organises choral workshops where they teach people reading and writing music through the staff notation and on the line is a workshop to be held in Salima for three days. Details, he added, will be on the choir’s Facebook page.
