Lilongwe Msozi North legislator Sosten Gwengwe (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) has commended Lilongwe District Council for starting the construction of a K59 million bridge in his area.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday at Miteme Primary School ground, the parliamentarian, who is also Minister of Trade, said the project will improve development in the area.

Gwengwe: I will monitor the projects

The bridge, which is being financed through the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (Gesd) Project with funding from the World Bank, will connect the road network in traditional authorities (T/As) Chadza and Tsabango.

Gwengwe said mobility is an important aspect in the economic development of any area.

He said: “The Nanjiri River has claimed innocent souls, especially children during the rainy season as pupils cross from one area to another to  schools.”

Gwengwe asked council officials to manage the resources prudently by constructing a durable bridge.

“We will monitor each  phase together with the councillors and I will not allow anyone to misuse the funds and produce substandard work,” he said.

T/A Chadza commended the council for the project and assured that his subjects will participate in the construction of the bridge.

“It has always been difficult for our people to access services in T/As Tsabango or Chadza for years,” said.

Chadza also said the road will reduce school dropout rate because many  children were unable to cross the bridge, especially during the rainy season.

In a related development, the council has also set aside money for the construction of a court in Lilongwe Mpenu Constituency in T/A Mazengera under the District Development Fund (DDF).

The area’s legislator Eisenhower Mkaka (MCP) also commended the council for the development.

Lilongwe District Council director of finance Charles Mhone said the council is implementing 31 projects in all sectors, including constructing schoolblocks, teachers’ houses, health workers’houses and traditional courts, among others.

He said 16 out of the 31 projects are funded by Gesd to the tune of over K500 million while the others are being implemented under the DDF with funds amounting to K200 million.

Mhone said the council will ensure transparency and accountability in the projects.
