Lilongwe farmers embrace new technologies

Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development director of animal health and livestock development Patrick Chikungwa says government will continue initiating various technologies to improve agriculture productivity in the country.

The official made the remarks in Malingunde on Tuesday during the Lilongwe Agriculture Development Division (ADD) field visit under the theme Diversified Agricultural Production for Household Food, Nutrition and Income Security.

He said: “Currently, we are facing problems that have come as a result of climate change. So, to mitigate the effects, the ministry came up with various technologies for Malawians to continue to have enough food and income despite the weather changes.”

In his remarks, Traditional Authority (T/A) Masula said diversified agriculture technologies reduced poverty and malnutrition in most households in his area.

Joseph Magombo, a sweet potato farmer from T/A  Chadza, said challenges in raising money for fertiliser for his maize field and inadequate rains prompted him to start growing the crop which he touts as doing well.
