Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has accused Lilongwe City Council mayor Willie Chipondera of sidelining its councillors in terms of planning of development projects.

Speaking at a press briefing at MCP headquarters in Lilongwe yesterday, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said her party is concerned about the conduct of the mayor.

MCP is accusing the mayor of holding development meetings without informing MCP councillors.

“Why is it that whenever there are council development meetings, the mayor is always sidelining MCP councillors?” wondered Kabwila.

According to Kabwila, MCP is surprised as to why the mayor is sidelining the councillors that are in majority.

Besides, she said recently all Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and United Democratic Front (UDF) councillors in their regalia were seen at Kamuzu International Airport( KIA) welcoming President Peter Mutharika.

Kabwila said she is not surprised to see that the City of Lilongwe remains dirty compared to Blantyre City because there is no much input from the MCP councillors.

According to Kabwila, MCP wrote the mayor protesting his conduct.

But the mayor yesterday disputed accusations of favouritism.

He said every time there is a development planning meeting, his office communicates to each and every councillor.

The mayor also confirmed receiving a letter of protest from MCP.

Said Chipondera: “Yes, I have received the letter which they wrote, but I have not responded to it.”

MCP has majority councillors almost in every council in the Central Region.

  1. This is an indicator that MCP councillors are not helpful. We do they need an MPs to speak for them. They should go to the chamber. Absence at the airport is part of the Chakwera and MCP’s strategy to frustrate DPP plans by boycotting. For example, it was the MCP President boycotted the meeting attended by all Presidential candidates contested in 2014 General elections. I thinks JK is making noise because there is no man to cheer her at night. I will volunteer myself if all men are not willing although it is against the law in Nyasaland.
