Music Development Organisation (MDO) will this week sensitise businesspeople in Lilongwe on piracy, organisers have revealed.

Leader of the newly-formed music pressure group, Kendal Kamwendo, said they will conduct a citywide tour to give people a glimpse of what their objectives.

“We don’t want to work behind doors because it is only by working together with the public that we can fight piracy,” said Kamwendo.

The Nyemba Nyemba co-star said that the awareness campaign includes 30 minutes briefings in various business centres.

According to him, the group will involve the police, Music Association of Malawi (MAM) and Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) during the tour.

Among the target areas are Area 25, Area 23, Chinsapo, Area 22, Area 24, Kawale and Lilongwe City markets where reports of piracy are high.

MDO started as taskforce against piracy three months ago.

Its office are located in CCDC in Kawale and started to operate last Monday.

The interim steering committee includes Kamwendo, Symon Kamlaka, Peter Uyu Mlangeni, Boniface Kavalasanza, Sally Nyundo, Evance Meleka and John Magwila Chisale.

Recently, the group pressed Cosoma to release musician’s royalties and confiscated thousands of pirated CDs and duplicating equipment.
