Lilongwe Select humiliate Silver Strikers

Lilongwe Select side on Saturday spoiled Reserve Bank of Malawi’s (RBM) Golden Jubilee celebrations when they beat the Central Bank sponsored side, Silver Strikers, 3-1 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

The celebrations had started well in the morning with lots of activities happening at the stadium including netball, tug-of-war, bawo, tennis, basketball and reached the climax with the football match, but the select side showed no mercy for the Bankers.

RankenMwale put the select side ahead in the early stages when he calmly headed home a Gerald Nkungula corner kick.

TsanzoDalio made it 2-0 a minute into extra time of the first half through a penalty which was awarded after Innocent Tanganyika was fouled in the box.

Then Mwale claimed a brace and the third for his side with 13 minutes remaining to put the game beyond the hosts.

Four minutes later, Wadabwa scored the consolation goal for Silver.

The select side which comprised players from Lilongwe-based side, received K1.5 million prize while Silver got a K1 million consolation.

Despite the loss, RBM deputy governor responsible for operations Meg Kajiyanike described the event as successful.

She thanked FAM and sports associations for supporting the event.

“It has been a very entertaining day and we had fun. Everything went well and we saying thank you to all stakeholders,” she said.
