Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says registration of voters and inspection of the voters’ roll for Lilongwe South Constituency and Matenje Ward by-elections will run concurrently for two days on October 10 and 11 2019.

A statement signed by MEC chief elections officer Sam Alfandika says centres will open from 8am up to 4pm and will remain operational during lunch time.

“All those who registered for the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections will not need to register again, but just go to the centre where they registered to inspect their names in the voters roll.

“Those eligible to register are Malawians who have attained the age of 18 and above or will attain the voting age on the last day of voter registration,” reads the statement in part.

MEC has since advised first-time registrants to go with their national identity cards (IDs) or the registration slip they were given by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) as evidence of civil registration as there will be no NRB personnel at voter registration centres.

Said Alfandika: “All eligible registrants without the national ID are encouraged to go and register at NRB offices located at their respective council headquarters. There will be no NRB personnel at voter registration centres to register those without national IDs.  The commission is also advising that no transfers will be allowed.”

The commission has since appealed to employers to release their employees to go and register or inspect their details in the voters’ roll and traditional and faith leaders, parents and teachers to encourage all who have not registered to go and register.

According to Alfandika, the commission will receive nomination papers from all aspirants on October 16 2019.

However, aspirants are encouraged to take their nomination papers for pre-inspection on October 15 2019 at their constituency/ward returning office.
