It was again a bad year for Blantyre golf teams, when they played second-fiddle to Lilongwe in the annual SDV Ladies Inter-Club Golf Tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club last weekend.
The Lilongwe team has retained the honours it won in Blantyre last year.
The tournament was played on 3-Ball Alliance format on Saturday and 3-Ball Better Ball on Sunday.
Despite Kasasa and Nchalo clubs failing to make it, it was Lilongwe Team C of Evelyn Bailey, Carol Bowers and Maria Lee Cho who carried the day.
They had a score of 147 counting out Lilongwe Team A of LGC ladies captain Stella Ng’oma, Sheila Chinkhandwe and Karen Baylis.
The Blantyre team of Ladies Golf Union (LGU) president Carol Banda, Wilma Chalulu and Laura Moran finished a distant third.
“We had great golf and we enjoyed it thoroughly. It feels good to have come out tops against some of the best lady golfers in the country. The course itself was fantastic. We are grateful to SDV for continuing to promote ladies golf,†said Bailey on behalf of the winners.
Chinkhandwe had the longest drive on both days while Bowers was nearest to the pin on Saturday. Bailey was nearest to the pin on Sunday.
SDV Malawi managing director Rodrick Phiri said the tournament will be back next year.
“We are always delighted to sponsor ladies golf. This is our contribution in developing the game of golf among ladies in the country. We are thankful to LGC for the excellent work in hosting the event,†said Phiri.
Ng’oma expressed satisfaction with the level of competition displayed by golfers during the event. She, however, urged more ladies to join the sport.
“I am calling on all ladies interested in golf to come to the club and join the elite ladies golf. For the sports to improve and attract more sponsors we need more ladies participating,†she said.
SDV, which also sponsors Kasasa and Nchalo Invitational tournaments, donated K50 000 (about $166) towards the up keep of the LGC course.
