Lilongwe teams dominate volleyball Championship
Mzuzu volleyball teams failed to use home ground advantage in this year’s K2 million Raiply National Invitational Tournament as they were outplayed by Lilongwe-based teams.
During the event, Kamuzu Barracks scooped the first position, Blue Eagles came second while Lilongwe Spikers came third.
The tournament took place at Katoto Secondary School from November 14 to 16.
However, the Lilongwe-based soldiers outclassed the other nine teams, including four from Mzuzu.
Kamuzu Barracks captain McGodwin Mangani said it was not new that his side won this championship, saying they have been earning it all along.
“If they do not pull their socks up, they should forget ever winning this title,” said Mangani.
Kamuzu Barracks travelled back to Lilongwe K400 000 richer while runners-up Blue Eagles got K150 000.
Speaking during prize presentation, Minister of Sports Grace Chiumia, who was the guest of honour, urged the corporate world to consider sponsoring other sports disciplines such as volleyball.
“I would like to thank Raiply for sponsoring volleyball in Malawi. That is the kind of cooperation government wants,” said Chiumia.
Raiply chief executive officer Thomas Oomen said they are happy to be associated with the sport for six years.
“As a company, we value the impact sports play. We are sure that if we sustain the sport in such a way, we will produce good volleyball national team players who can represent Malawi during international games,” said Oomen.
