Lilongwe to host BBA 8 auditions

Lilongwe has been given the honours to host the auditions for Malawi’s representatives in Africa’s leading reality show Big Brother season 8.

Contrary to the trend in the past, where auditions for the reality series were conducted in two separate cities, the 2013 season will only have one venue.

Exactly a decade after Africa pioneered the world’s first-ever continental Big Brother, the show will return to DStv and GOtv screens from May 26, with more of the must-watch entertainment, drama and excitement that it is famous for.

Each participating country namely Angola, South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe will have to choose a city where auditions will be held.

“Lilongwe has been chosen as it collected the highest number of entries. 54 people from the capital, submitted their entries either by hand to Multichoice offices or via the Internet. Blantyre on the other hand has 32 entries,” said MultiChoice Malawi sales and marketing manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda.

“Therefore, the search team, thus Big Brother producers Endemol, will be in the country mid-March for the auditions that will take place from 11 to 13 of the month,” added Nyirenda.

However, he said the decision on the venue rests in the hands of the Endemol team.

Explained Nyirenda: “The auditioning team is responsible for making a booking of the venue.

“But most likely, Crossroads Hotel will be the venue.”

Three hundred thousand dollars is at stake in the winner-takes-it-all competition. Entries closed on Thursday, 14 February.
