Limbe Leaf lifts Mpico Social Football trophy

Limbe Leaf Socials defeated Bunda Alumni FC 3-0 on Saturday to lift the K1.7 million Mpico Social Football Trophy at Area 30 in Lilongwe.

Limbe Leaf deserved the championship after displaying entertaining football during the two-week tournament which drew 12 teams.football

In the quarter-finals, Limbe Leaf beat AHL Socials 1-0 before seeing off Old Mutual  2-0  in the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Bunda Alumni beat Mpico 1-0 in the quarter-finals and in the semi-finals overcame Black Rhino 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out. Normal time ended 2-2.

Mpico managing director Peter du Plessis watched all the matches. He expressed satisfaction with the performance, interaction and sportsmanship displayed during the games.

“It was a great tournament and we watched some good football. As Mpico we are happy that the tournament has been a success. There was good interaction for those who participated. I congratulate Limbe Leaf, they deserved to win from the way they played,” said Du Plessis.

He promised that the tournament will be back next year.

In a third-place match, Black Rhino beat Old Mutual 3-2 on penalties after regulation time ended 0-0.

Chairperson of the organising committee, Jack Msosa, also classified the tournament as a success.

The winner received a trophy and K250 000. Runners-up Bunda got K200 000 whereas third-placed Black Rhino got K150 000.
