The Blantyre lions Club from November 30 embarked on a campaign against diabetes and high blood pleasure with a target to reach 1000 people by 3 December.

Speaking Friday in an interview during one of the campaign sessions conducted at Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) the organisation’s chairman of community services, Lion George Chirombe explained that though their core business is on eye sight this time his organisation thought of targeting the two non-communicable diseases (NCDs) after noticing limited awareness on such diseases.

He said: “Our main purpose is to serve those in need in society. We believe there is a need to concentrate on these NCDs and we saw that most employees do not have time to go to the hospital to get tasted that is why we decided to do the campaigns in companies too.”

“We have since done this campaign at Rabs Processors Limited and Mapeto David Whitehead where 250 and 200 people were tasted respectively.”

Lion George also emphasised the need for early diagnosis to ensure timely treatment saying diabetes can be controlled in those circumstances.

Such a campaign comes at a time when Malawi joined the world in commemorating the diabetes month in November and a number of stakeholders have been conducting different activities in line with this year’s theme-Eyes on Diabetes.
