Red Lions added Silver Strikers to their list of casualties with a 1-0 win in a fiercely contested TNM Super League match played at Zomba Community Centre ground on Sunday.

It was a second loss for the Bankers within 24 hours, after tumbling to new entrants Evirom FC by the same margin in Blantyre. With the win, Lions remain the only side yet to lose in the league.

In a rather physical match, which was watched by Flames coach Tom Saintfiet and his assistant Eddington Ng’onamo, the two teams played out to a goalless draw in the first-half.

Bright Ngwenyama for the soldiers was first called to duty by Rodrick Gonani, but was equal to the effort. On the other hand, the Bankers’ Charles Swini made a telling save from Dickson Mbetewa’s low shot.

The second-half stirred the passions when the two teams started playing inter-passing football. In the 65th minute, the soldiers pulled out Willard John and Matthews Simbeye for Bonface Kaulesi and Kumbukani Mwambene respectively.

The  move paid dividends barely a few minutes  later when Mwambene made a solo run from the halfway line and dribbled his way through, leaving markers in his wake. He then released a thundering shot that went under the diving Swini for the only goal of the match.

Silver Strikers assistant coach Hellings Mwakasungula  said the losses have given the technical panel food for thought when preparing for next games. His counterpart Mike Kumanga praised his charges for sticking to the tactical plan.
