Lions, Escom, Epac in Carlsberg last 8

Two second-half goals by substitute Thomas Makumba helped Red Lions FC secure a quarter-final berth over Silver Strikers in a highly charged Carlsberg Cup played at Zomba Community Centre ground on Sunday.

Makumba came in for Bonface Kaulesi and scored his first goal in the 64th minute.

A few minutes later, he claimed his second from a Kumbukani Mwambene’s cross. From this moment, the Bankers looked disorganised.

The visitors’ Green Harawa was unlucky to have seen his diving header go agonisingly wide of the goalmouth after Dave Moya had done the spadework on the right.

Red Lions coach Collins Nkuna was over the moon with the win.

“We prepared tactfully for this game and I am glad it has worked. We are now looking forward to our next opponents in the competition,” he said.

In Mzuzu, Escom United were 2-0 winners over Karonga Vendors with goals from Benard Harawa and Bashir Maunde. In Lilongwe, Blue Eagles Reserves beat Super Eagles 3-1 whereas Epac FC beat Civo United 3-2.
