Red Lions have finally topped the 2013 TNM Super League standings following a 2-0 beating of Epac FC on Sunday to go a point clear of deposed leaders Blue Eagles.

The Lions made up for their 2-1 loss the previous day to win at home through Kumbukani Mwambeni and Matthews Simbeyi goals in Zomba.

The Lions have 21 points, Eagles follow on 20 while Kamuzu Barracks are placed third on 19 points. Big Bullets seat fourth following a 5-0 thumping of now bottom-placed Mzuzu United at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

Mzuzu’s fortunes became worse as they dropped to the bottom following yet another disastrous 3-0 beating by fifth-positioned Azam Tigers at the giant stadium on Sunday. Tigers have 17 points after goals from Malumbo Gondwe, Clement Ng’ombe and Isaac Kaliyati.

Also on 17 points are Mighty Wanderers placed sixth after seeing off the Lions on Saturday in Balaka through Innocent Dzimbiri and Kondwani Kumwenda’s strikes after Benjamin Kalua’s had put the soldiers ahead.

So tough is the league, all rookies have been pushed to the bottom three with Mponela United now second from the bottom below Evirom. Evirom have six points after drawing 2-2 with Mponela who have five points just like Mzuzu.

There are some 35 games remaining to wind up the first round, according to the Super League of Malawi fixtures secretary Patrick Chisale.

“So far, 166 goals have been scored. Kamuzu Barracks have scored the most goals in the elite league so far (18) and are followed by Big Bullets, Moyale and Red Lions with 15 each. Azam Tigers have let in only two this far, one of them being an own goal. While rookies Mzuzu United have conceded the most (28),” Chisale said in a brief statement issued on Sunday.
