The Livingstonia Aids Programme (Lisap) has injected about K235 million (US$635 135) into its Boy and Girl Empowerment Project in Karonga.

The project, which aims to empower young boys and girls through education to fight abuse emanating from harmful traditions, began in 2009 to the tune of K90 million (US$243 243).

It was expected to end this year, but because of its impressive performance the project has been extended to 2016.

Speaking during the end of term evaluation meeting in Karonga on Thursday, Lisap director Mphatso Ngulube said the project, funded by Tear Fund, has made a significant difference in its impact areas of Iponga and Mwakaboko; hence, the decision to extend it.

Ngulube said the project has been extended to other zones in Karonga such as Nkhando and Mwenitete.

“We were motivated to start this project by the Kupimbira practice in the district, whereby parents give their child in marriage when they fail to pay back debts. Lisap, together with the communities, came up with by-laws that are being followed to make the project a success.

“There has been a reduction in early marriages and school enrolment has increased. Lisap also helps needy students academically,” she said.

Group Village Head Gweleweta of T/A Kilupula said the project has improved school attendance in the area since people have been sensitised on the importance of education.
