Living room makeover without spending

Listen to this article

For most of us re-decorating our home scares us. Who wouldn’t be in this volatile economy? Putting food on the table is the priority. But there are simple ways of giving your living room or sitting room a makeover by spending a few kwacha or none at all. DUMASE ZGAMBO-MAPEMBA writes.

One thing that I have believed in home décor and design is that less is more. If you get into a home that has less accessories and furniture that are beautiful and unique, you will appreciate this. There are a few tips that we need to follow that will help us transform our living room without forcing us to spend.

De-clutter

Look around your living room. Do you see anything that you feel is not meant to be where it is? Ask yourself: what value is it adding to the room? Sometimes we buy a lot of expensive things that we think will enhance the look of the room. Unfortunately, some of them end up making the space look drab!

Let in natural light

Most houses that are being built today have fewer walls but more windows or openings. The importance of light in decoration can never be emphasised. If your house has small or less windows make sure the curtains you are using should not have a dense colour. Light colours like white, light green and orange will do the trick.

Re-arrange furniture

Moving around furniture will give a new look to your room. Let the couches or sofas maximize the focal points which is either the TV or fireplace or both.

Fill blank walls sparingly

Yes we want to put memories on the wall but too much will make the room look and feel heavy. Your guests will have no place to focus on.

Don’t just match but coordinate colours

Modern way of mixing colours is not just matching. Use different ones but coordinate them.

Fresh flowers and vases

Make a vast out of big empty tin of decorate it with an old pretty flowery cloth or use small tin and wrap old pretty sox around them (inset). Make use of the flowers around your home.
