The Museums of Malawi under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture on Tuesday commemorated the 200th birthday of Dr. David Livingstone.

During the event held at Chichiri Museum in Blantyre, director of museums, Lovemore Mazibuko, said Livingstone remains a very important figure to Malawi because he brought commerce, Christianity and civilisation.

Mazibuko said the ministry is planning to hold a temporary exhibition of Livingstone’s life on September 17 because that is the day the missionary arrived in Malawi.

“Livingstone instilled the spirit of brotherhood and fellowship among many Africans. He also played a very important role in abolishing human trafficking and slave trade.

“The history of such important people should not die and that is why we are celebrating his birthday. An exhibition of his life will follow in September,” said Mazibuko.
