Liwimbi challenges tourism SMEs to use social media

Minister of Tourism Wildlife and Culture Daniel Liwimbi has challenged small and medium enterprises working in tourism sector to make use of the social media if the country is to continue attracting more tourists.

Speaking when he closed a small and medium enterprises (SMEs) week-long seminar on ‘Social Media and New Marketing Opportunities’ for Tourism SME’s at Lingadzi Inn on Friday, Liwimbi said that the training is important because it will address some of knowledge gaps that exist in the tourism and hospitality sector.

“I am very optimistic that the training has imparted useful knowledge and I would like to urge the participants to make full use of it. As government it is our wish that tourism units are run professionally,” said Liwimbi.

According to the minister, the tourism sector is dominated by SMEs which require financial assistance and technical know -how and government will always do its best to help.

One of the facilitators of the training, Manuel Minnie of Livingston Dialoog from Germany, said the training aims to strengthen human capital for the tourism sector in the country.

“Malawi is hidden pearl of a destination and it does not matter what you think before you visit the country, but once you are here you discover the authenticity and pureness of the people,” said Minnie.

The training attracted over 15 people and some of the subjects tackled included tour guiding, SME development as well as tourism product or experience development.
