Lilongwe District Council says shortage of classrooms in primary schools within its jurisdiction is gradually ending, thanks to efforts by stakeholders.

Council chairperson Samson Chaziya said this when Good Neighbours International handed over a four-classroom block at Katsumwa Primary School in Traditional Authority Kalolo in the district on Wednesday.

“We feel proud to have partners who are development-conscious. Shortage of classrooms is one of the major challenges in our primary schools and with such assistance the challenge is coming to an end,” he said.

The donation means the organisation has built eight classrooms at the school as another four-classroom block was handed over in 2014.

Good Neighbours International managing director Kwiok Kim said the organisation wanted to provide a conducive environment for pupils in rural areas.

“Our belief is that if the environment is conducive, pupils will be encouraged to go to school unlike when they learn under trees where they are distracted by a number of things,” he said.

Apart from the classroom block, the organisation has also provided 120 desks and teachers’ tables and chairs, constructed toilets and drilled a solar-powered borehole.

The school’s head teacher, Fradson Kamphinga, said the donation will help some of the school’s 1 600 pupils who were learning under trees. n
