National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has partnered with White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood-Malawi (Wrasm-M) in a campaign to raise awareness of the role and importance of midwives.

Lilongwe Urban Nice district civic education officer Hajira Ali said in a telephone interview on Tuesday the campaign will run for 10 days during which communities in Lilongwe will appreciate the role midwives play in maternal health and their working conditions.

Said Ali: “We will start our campaign with a public rally at Chinsapo on Thursday [yesterday]. Basically, we want communities to understand the role midwives play in fostering maternal health and sexual and reproductive health rights in our societies.”

Wrasm-M national coordinator Nancy Kamwendo said they initiated the campaign after noting that many quarters do not seem to appreciate the harsh conditions under which midwives operate.

She said midwives face many challenges, particularly because they are operating with inadequate resources.

“Midwives are working under very stressful conditions, but still they are trying their best to serve Malawians and help government achieve maternal and child health goals.

“We, therefore, find it befitting that communities should be sensitised on this; hence, this campaign,” she narrated. n
