LL Police lobby MPs support

Lilongwe Police Station has asked members of Parliament (MPs) to assist in the construction of police units that were destroyed during the anti-Jane Ansah demonstrations.

Speaking on Wednesday during a council meeting, Lilongwe Police Station officer-in-charge Mabvuto M’bobo said the legislators should fully support security efforts in areas such as Msundwe, Mpingu, Chitedze, Malembo and Njewa.

He said: “We’re facing security challenges in those areas; hence, pleading with you to assist us in the construction and renovations of police units and staff houses. This will ensure an effective fight against crime.”

M’bobo, however, bemoaned unending chieftaincy wrangles in Chitekwere, Mazengera, Kalumba, M’bwatalika, Chiseka and Chingala.

He observed that the rows spark fear and insecurity among the community.

“We urge our district commissioner [Lawford Palani] to look into these issues as quickly as possible for the sake of peace and harmony,” said M’bobo.

On his part, Lilongwe Police Station executive committee chairperson Alfred Muunika agreed with M’bobo and pleaded with the chiefs to resolve their disputes.

He said:” No development can take place in an area where its leaders are fighting or quarreling.”

In his remarks, Lilongwe City North legislator Gladwell Chimdzeka said, as duty-bearers, they are committed to addressing issues raised by the police.

“We’ll join hands with the police to address some of the concerns. We’ll also raise awareness about these defilement cases,” he said.
