The Malawi Council for the Handicapped (Macoha) has stated that more able bodied people than disabled people are benefiting from scholarships given by the council in its institutions because disabled people lack entry requirements into the various programmes offered. Head of training for Macoha Lilongwe Vocational Centre, Alexina Katha Kayira, said this in an interview on Wednesday. “People with disabilities face a lot of problems in the education sector. The problem is that most schools lack special needs teachers as well as facilities to teach disabled students,” she said. Macoha has trained over 1 300 disabled people and some of them are given start up tools such as machines to use when they have graduated. —Lucy Bandazi, Malawi News Agency
