Loxx360 has vowed to win the Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) Club Championship title race that starts today at the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) and College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex.

The Blantyre-based side, which was formed last year, is the only new team that has made it into the eight-team club championship. They qualified after finishing as runners-up in the Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) a fortnight ago.

“We are not intimidated by the top teams. In fact, we are fired up by the challenge because we want to prove that the founding of Loxx360 was meant to beat the best teams and win titles.

“We have come to realise that a well organised defence, team spirit and confidence are the essential tools for winning competitions and we have all these in store,” said the team’s founder Justin Luwemba on Wednesday.

Loxx360 beat Sozobal heavyweights Magang’a 78-74 in the play-offs. Magang’a failed to qualify for the championships for the first time in eight years.

Loxx360 will represent Sozobal alongside Bricks and Crazy Warriors whereas Mimbulu, ABC Lions and Trojans will represent the Centre. Northern Region representatives are Pistons and Nkhulande.

According to Basmal vice-president Ben Mlasaanthu, BYC and CoM will host the first games of the two-day national club championships today (Friday) while BYC will host the finals on Saturday.

“The event has been divided into two groups of four. Bricks, Lions, Loxx360 and Pistons will play at BYC while Mimbulu, Crazy Warriors, Trojans and Nkhulande will play at CoM,” said Mlasaanthu.
