The Luchenza Municipal Council on Wednesday handed over newly constructed Luchenza Catholic Primary School to the Archdiocese of Blantyre of the Catholic Church.

Speaking when he handed over the school built under Local Development Fund (LDF), Luchenza Municipality Mayor Harold Kaliwo said the school will help increase space for learners in the municipality and Sambagalu Ward where it is located.

He said: “It is also evident that the construction of the new school here will help to decongest Luchenza Primary School. The fact that most learners who congested Luchenza come from this part of the municipality means that they will now have a short distance to walk to school.”

In his remarks after receiving the school on behalf of the archdiocese, Father Lawrence Simbota, who represented the Most Reverend Archbishop Thomas Msusa, said the Catholic Church regards education highly.

He said it is in the policy of the church to educate people and ensure their holistic development regardless of their religious affiliation and as such the church will ensure it looks after all children to be enrolled at the school.

In an interview, Thyolo district education manager (DEM) Charles Sakwata, speaking in an interview, said the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) is very serious about the school considering the challenges that were there in its absence. n
