Lucius prefers to perform early

Malawi’s veteran musician Lucius Banda says he would love to be performing at the beginning of the shows while his audience is fresh.

Recently, Banda surprised the fans when he appeared on the stage at the beginning of the show.

This happened on December 14, at Robin’s Park in Blantyre during Malawi vs. Zambia concert. Banda performed after Lulu. Then on New Year’s eve at Mungo Park, fans were surprised to see Banda being the first artist to perform. The show billed artists such as Lulu, Wendy, Pisky, Armstrong, Maskal, Anthony Makondetsa and Black Missionaries.

Banda described the development as an honour to him.

“I know that people were surprised, but to me it was an honour. You know whenever the show starts, people are always fresh. They are sober and able to follow the music, so to perform at that time, it’s an honour…

“Performing at the end has disadvantages in that people become tired and too drunk. They don’t follow the music and they can’t identify a blunder. To them, anything becomes good music,” he said.

Banda said if he were to be allowed to choose, he would prefer to sing at the beginning of all shows.

He said his fans have been criticising him vehemently for coming on the stage late.
