The inactivity that musicians are facing following restrictions effected in response to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has forced many to find alternative means of reaching out to their fans.
One such artist who is exploiting the digital spaces to connect with his fans is songwriter, musician and producer Lulu. After staging a live online performance with Wendy Harawa last week, was at it again on Wednesday with rapper Macelba.
The two artists came face to face in an hour-long interactive session with their fans. The session was spiced up with a number of performances, including a rendition of their latest duet Chisankho.
The session, which was streamed live on Lulu’s Mathemela Band Facebook page, faced a few network glitches but the two artists were never discouraged with the setback.
The constant feedback which came from their fans also gave them a big push.
The combination of the two goes as far back as 2018 when they produced the hit Wanga Ndiwe. Their reunion on Wednesday was a perfect platform to promote their recent collaboration Chisankho whose video has just been released this week.
Lulu played the guitar for what was almost an acoustic session and together they did the song Chisankho. Macelba then did Palibe and Mawa before Lulu performed his two compositions Hannah and Ungondibwelezera.
In a post-performance interview, Lulu said the sessions have been designed as chat shows to allow them stay connected with their fans and to entertain them.
“I feel like I have that muscle to do that from my studio. Macelba is talented and it was good to have him. More ideas are coming in so we will see how it goes,” he said.
On his part, Macelba said the platform provided an opportunity to some of their fans who have not had the opportunity to sample the Chisankho video and even those who did not know that it is out.
He said: “I came in as a guest. We have created this vibe between us so every time we are working, the flow is natural.” Meanwhile, the two artists have revealed that they have done another song which will be in Lulu’s forthcoming album.
