Lilongwe-based musician Lulu was on Saturday morning summoned to Kawale Police Station in Lilongwe over a quarrel with a friend at a drinking joint in Kawale Township.

Both Lulu and some police officers at the police station confirmed the incident in interviews on Sunday.

“It is true, I was detained at Kawale Police Station on Saturday morning over a quarrel with a friend at a drinking place near Kawale PTC. However, there was no case and the issue was solved without engaging the police because the injury suffered by the complainant was not purported,” said Lulu.

On Friday night, the social media was awash with news that the musician had been arrested for fighting with a man over a commercial sex worker.

Nonetheless, according to information gathered, Lulu fell into verbal spate with one of the imbibers over the latter’s attempts to disturb peace at the pub.

Apparently, the musician reacted by asking the imbiber, who is reported to be a Burundian, to keep quiet. This angered the complainant who wanted to attack the musician and in defence, Lulu blocked an attack and in the course the complainant fell and got hurt.

This turned the mood worse as the two continued to quarrel, according to eye-witnesses.

However, the issue was not reported to Police until Saturday morning when the Burundian, who also runs a bottle store in Kawale, went to the police station to complain of being injured by the musician.

Sergeant Lucky Mkwamba of Kawale Police Station, speaking as a witness, confirmed that the police station received a complaint from the Burundian against the artist.

He said they summoned the artist to the station.

“It is like one of the common incidents that happen at drinking joints. The complainant was very drunk and there was a verbal exchange between the two that resulted in a quarrel. In the course of quarrelling, the complainant fell to the ground and got hurt. The bottle cut on one of his fingers.

“However, when they came to the police, discussion with them showed that it was a minor incident and the quarrel was influenced by drunkenness and so we did not file any case. They apologised to each other and no one was arrested,” said Mkwamba.

As we went to press, the complainant was not available for comment, but Lulu, who claims to be a friend to the complainant, said he is a victim of being a celebrity. He said it was a minor issue, but people propelled it for personal reasons to have him arrested.
