Harold Lungu and Shelon Marques sparkled at Thyolo Sports Club (TSC) on Sunday following their respective victories in the men and ladies’ categories of the FMB Golf Tournament that attracted a 79-strong field.

Lungu shot to a three-over-par finish to take the crown and end his year-long title drought.

Playing off handicap-10, the golfer collected 44 points, a shot ahead of his runner-up Rajeev Rawat and two shots in front of third-placed Charles Merrick.

Lungu did not leave anything to chance as he gorged on three birdies and 14 pars. However, his defining moment came on the 15th hole where apart from earning a birdie, he also secured a two-club.

“I am back to my winning ways because I am now able to hit the ball much better. That, plus the perfect condition of the course, made me a beast on the greens today,” Lungu said.

In the ladies’ section, Marques ensured that the swing demons that troubled her the previous day during the Airtel Broadband contest were out of the way as she sprang to the summit of the eight-member category with 39 points.

“It feels great to win a trophy a day after missing one in another competition. Today I was calm and I thank my playing partners for helping me to have a good time on the golf course,” handicap-30 Marques said.

FMB head of marketing Sylvia Mataka, who was accompanied by the bank’s head of corporate affairs Agnes Jazza, said they organised the event to interact with both existing and prospective clients.

“This was the first time that we conducted a golf event in Thyolo and we are happy to have fielded a competition that was nicely attended,” Mataka said after presenting a K300 000 cheque to TSC for greens’ maintenance.
