Lunyangwa Cooperative aids Mzuzu Crisis Nursery
Staff ReporterMembers of Lunyangwa Mzuzu Market Hardware Cooperative spent their New Year’s Day with children at Mzuzu Crisis Nursery where they also donated assorted items such as washing powder, milk, napkins and clothes.
Mzuzu Crisis Nursery, which is under Ministry of Hope, a non-governmental organisation, looks after orphans aged less than six months.
Speaking after handing over the items, the cooperative’s chairperson Levi Soko said the future of the nation depends on such children; hence, they need support to grow into productive citizens.
He said: “Early childhood is a critical stage of development that forms the foundation for children’s future well-being and learning. A child’s intelligence potential is developed at that stage.”
In his remarks, Mzuzu Crisis Nursery administration officer Augustine Harawa urged other associations to emulate the gesture by the cooperative.
He emphasised that there are many problems the nursery is facing that require support.
“We receive many kids from various places and such support is vital. We urge others to emulate the good gesture displayed by the cooperative,” said Soko.
Lunyangwa Mzuzu Market Hardware Cooperative was established in 2016 and has 13 members.
They save and borrow each other money at a small interest. The past year, the cooperative’s savings have accumulated to about K4 million. n
