Blue Eagles Sisters centre Takondwa Lwazi underlined her credentials as one of the country’s brightest netball prospects when she was named Player of the Tournament in the MultiChoice Malawi-sponsored GOtv Champions League.

Lwazi, who also plays for the national team, was named the tournament’s best player and centre during a gala night held at Ufulu Gardens in Lilongwe on Saturday evening.

It was a perfect solace for Lwazi, whose team lost 38-28 in the finals earlier on to Kukoma Diamonds at Don Bosco.

“After losing in the finals, the awards come as a timely solace. They will inspire me to work even harder,” said Lwazi.

Diamonds up-and-coming shooter Alinafe Kamwala was named the best shooter while her team-mate Wezi Mzembe was named the best defender.

Kamwala enjoyed a rich vein of form throughout the tournament.

The awardees were presented with GOtv decorders plus one month subscription.

Nine players have been nominated for four individual awards and five of them, namely Kamwala, her Civonets counterpart Mary Mvere, Thunder Queens centre Thandi Galeta, Civonets Rose Mkanda and Diamonds defender Wezzie Mzembe were nominated for the first time since the annual competition started two seasons ago.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Rosy Chinunda thanked MutiChoice Malawi for the sponsorship, saying it is helping to expose up-and-coming talent.

MultiChoice Malawi sponsored the event to the tune of K18.1 million ($30 268) with 80 percent of the sponsorship going directly to the clubs. Champions Diamonds received a trophy and K2.5 million ($4 181).
