Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) has unveiled plans to introduce scholarships to help needy students especially those pursuing engineering studies at The Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima).

Speaking during presentation of a K1.5 million cheque to representatives of the Polytechnic Students Alumini in Lilongwe last week, LWB chief executive officer Alfonso Chikuni said the board learnt with sadness that some students are struggling to find accommodation at the college.

“We were pressed to provide assistance because of the current status of some students at the college. We read in the media that one student has nowhere to sleep and he sleeps with guards.

“This is sad because we recruit interns from the institution [and] for this reason, we will introduce scholarships to deserving needy bright students,” he said.

Speaking after receiving the cheque, a representative of the Polytechnic Students Alumini, Limbani Kakhome, said the donation will go a long way in their mission to help needy students.

“The money will not only help us reach out to the needy students, but will also add to what we have to construct hostels at the school so that the bed pace is increased,” he said.

Apart from the Polytechnic Students Alumini, LWB also presented a K750 000 cheque to Hope for Cancer Foundation to help them establish a cancer wellness centre.
