An Islamic charity, Bilal Relief Trust, on Tuesday distributed maize flour to villagers in Machinga and Mangochi districts in response to the food crisis facing the country.

“We are giving out the food aid regardless of region, race or any political affiliation. Our interest is to help every Malawian in need of food aid. We are picking beneficiaries randomly with help of chiefs,” he said.

He disclosed that so far 9 000 bags of flour in 10 kilogramme packages had been distributed.

Sattar said the trust wants to reach out to as many Malawians as possible, explaining that that they would require additional resources in transporting and sourcing of the food.

Beneficiaries in random interviews said the maize flour distribution was a relief to their families during this critical situation, and appealed for more support from other well-wishers. n
