Machinga schools hailed for sanitation initiatives

Machinga district chief education officer Douglas Namikungulu has commended schools for implementing sanitation initiatives.

He said this on Thursday during a school Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (Wash) competition at Nsanama Teachers Development Centre where four schools showcased different interventions aimed at improving hygiene at school level.

“It is important for schools to practise hygiene, especially now that there is the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

Namikungulu also commended Water for People for engaging schools in the district on Wash initiatives.

On his part, Water for People project officer Brain Mulenga said they were empowering learners to promote school hygiene.

Mlomba Primary School emerged the winner of the soap-making competition after beating Kalambo, Matope and Zumulu.

Mlomba Primary School head teacher Dennis Kaunde said schools have learned to make soap using locally-available materials.

The schools competed in soap-making, explaining the impact of soap-making skills to schools and the importance of washing hands with soap, among others.
