Machinga to have new vocational centre

A skills and vocational centre is under construction at Liwonde in Machinga where young people will learn skills in line with government’s drive to promote entrepreneurship and create employment.

Machinga district youth officer Swidern Zuze said the centre will offer training in carpentry and joinery, tailoring, bricklaying, welding and fabrication, among others.

He said the centre is being constructed with financial support from Vale Logistics, investors in a railway line that passes through Machinga and is being implemented as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.

Zuze also said the centre may be upgraded to a community college if other facilities like hostels are constructed.

According to Union Building Contractor site supervisor Symon Kacheula Mwale, the construction is expected to finish this year.

District Youth Network chairperson, Higil Kalinde said the project is a welcome development as youths in Machinga need more such centres.

Machinga has an existing skills and vocational centre at Chinyasa in Nayuchi area where more than 50 youths are learning carpentry and motorcycle repairing, according to Kalinde.

However, he called on the government to set up a community college in Machinga to enable youths in the district to acquire skills that should build their entrepreneurial skills. n
