Macra lifts moratorium on radio licences

Listen to this article

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has lifted a moratorium on issuance of radio frequency licences in the FM band for content services.

In June 2018, Macra suspended the issuance of radio frequency licences in the FM band to allow for re-planning of the band which had become congested and could not accommodate additional radio stations.

Speaking at a press briefing at its headquarters in Blantyre, Macra’s director of broadcasting Fegus Lipenga said a new plan for the band has been developed and Macra is ready to implement it.

He said this means that those that want to venture into radio broadcasting business or those who want to expand their frequencies can now start to apply.

The maximum waiting period for a licence is two months.
