Malawi President Peter Mutharika has appointed US pop star Madonna as Malawi’s Goodwill Ambassador for child welfare.

The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), made the announcement following a meeting between Mutharika and Madonna at Kamuzu Palace on Friday.

madonna_queennatMutharika hailed the Material Girl singer for remaining a true friend of Malawi.

“Thanks for bringing my grandchildren David and Mercy back to Malawi. I read in one of the papers that David is doing extremely well in his academic studies so much that he won awards. So let me congratulate you for that.

“I also thank you for the various programmes you are doing in areas such as education where you have constructed a number of school blocks,” said Mutharika.

He hailed Madonna for her plans to construct a paediatric surgery and intensive care children’s unit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.

“We have ailments such as club foot which are manageable, but we can’t treat due to lack of equipment. The coming in of the unit will definitely help,” said Mutharika.

Madonna said every trip to Malawi inspires her.

“I have been coming to Malawi for the past 10 years. I have a special place in my heart for Malawian children as I adopted two children from here.

“I see the importance of education and health care in the country,” she said.
