Mafco oust Moyale in Army games

Mafco United cruised to the semi-finals of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Inter-Unit Sports Tournament after edging Moyale 2-1 on Tuesday in Salima.

Administration Zomba are also out of the competition following a 2-0 loss at the hands of Changalume Barracks.

Airborne, too, are out of the tournament after losing to Kamuzu Barracks 2-0 while Cobbe Barracks (1MR) beat Navy Unit 2-0 to reach the semi-finals.

As we went to press, KB were meeting Changalume in the semi-finals whereas Mafco were expected to face Cobbe.

The finals will be played tomorrow (Friday).

Chairperson of the organising committee of the games, Major Henderson Chilenga, described the event as very competitive.

“This event is where we witness the best sporting teams and individuals within the MDF. The objective is about spotting raw talent. The talent identified here will translate into the success of the national football team in future,” said Chilenga.

In track and field events, Benedicto Makumba from 1MR (Cobbe Barracks) won the 800-metre race, Lance Bright House from Airborne was second, Always Zingere from Moyale came third while Kingsley Mussa from Airborne was fourth.

In women’s 800 metres, Fanny Fungula from Cobbe was the champion, Chris Soko from Mafco was second and Alice Msusumba from Administration Lilongwe was third whereas Khumbizire Chazembe from Mafco was fourth.

In tug-of-war, Mafco beat Zomba Airbase, Para (Airborne) beat Mafco, Support Battalion beat 11MR and Marine Unit beat 1MR (Cobbe Barracks).
