Mafco ready for Silver tomorrow

Salima-based Mafco FC are buoyed up with a 3-0 triumph over rookies Chikwawa United at the weekend and believe they can repeat the feat against Silver Strikers at Area 47 tomorrow.

Despite, the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) restrictions not to feature Martin Masoatheka and Gasha Mphizi, who are yet to be released by Civo United, Mafco coach Stereo Gondwe has plenty of options.

“I have a large squad of good players and that gives me plenty of options. We are set for the game. We just pray to God that on Saturday every player will be fit. We are taking the game to Silver. As defending champions, the pressure will be on them. We will just play our normal game,” said Gondwe who led the team to a third finish in the league last season.

The call by General Henry Odillo for all military teams to aim for league titles as a target is enough motivation to Mafco.

With strikers Callisto Kalinda, Richard Mbulu, Zasha Nong’oneza and Paul Phiri in scintillating form, Silver should be wary of a rejuvenated Mafco.

But the Bankers, too, have proved that they are ready to defend the title if their performance in the away 2-0 victory over Mighty Wanderers last Saturday is the measure of their performance this season.

The experience of strikers Green Harawa and Rodrcik Gonani, and Young Chimodzi Jnr, Blessings Tembo and Frank Banda in midfield is proving potent if the game against Wanderers is anything to go by.

“We had a great game in Blantyre. We could have scored more goals, but we won’t be carried away by that victory. Mafco is an entirely different team. We have to come up with a different game plan to counter them,” said coach Stein Chirwa who won the Bankers a title in his first spell as coach after replacing Franco Ndawa.

Of course, the Bankers will be under pressure from their rowdy fans who want nothing short of victory when playing at home.

But Chirwa played down any pressure: “We will just play our football and we believe the supporters will add to our success. They will be behind us all the way.”
