Magazine confers African Leadership Award on APM

The African Leadership Magazine has conferred on President Peter Mutharika the African Leadership Award and Medal of Honour in recognition of his outstanding posturing as one of the continent’s thought leaders.

The African Leadership Magazine Group was scheduled to present the award last evening (Malawi time) at an International Forum on African Leadership at the Waldorf Astoria in New York where Mutharika was also expected to make a keynote address, according to State House director of communications Bright Molande.

Mutharika’s keynote speech was themed Leadership Beyond Good Intentions: Delivering Sustainable Growth and Development in Africa—The Malawi Experience, according to literature on the event.

On the choice of Mutharika for the award, previously conferred on other leaders such as former presidents Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia, Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, John Kufuor of Ghana, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Mo Ibrahim, founder of Mo Ibrahim Prize for Leadership, the group said the President was recognised for his “outstanding posturing” as one of Africa’s most distinguished thought leaders and champion of the masses.

“To this end, you shall be conferred with this tripartite honour and be inducted into the African Leadership Hall of Fame, which represents the highest seal of approval, confidence and commendation from the board of the African Leadership Magazine Group,” reads communication from the United Kingdom-based magazine’s publisher and chief executive officer Ken Giami.

Reacting to Mutharika’s nomination, Molande said Malawians should be proud to have an African statesman.

He said the award demonstrated that when the world out there looks at Malawi, they see great things despite Malawians being concerned with their day-to-day challenges. n
